How to: Create a Warcraft Character Naming Scheme

** Warning. The text below is exceptionally nerdy, and if you harbour any remaining notion that i am somehow cool, you could probably not read it.**

The Background:

Games like World of Warcraft allow you to create multiple characters (typically called ‘toons’) to play.  When you belong to a social group (in WoW, its a ‘guild’) within a game and play multiple characters, it can be confusing to your guild mates as to which toon belongs to which player.

Up front, i don’t think any of this applies to you if you are on a “Role Playing” server.  A) You are weird, and b) your multiple characters probably have distinct personalities and are probably played independently of each other.

So, what are the qualities or functions that a naming scheme should provide? I would suggest that a name should:

  1. relate in someway to your other characters
  2. indicate in someway what class your character is

For 1. most people use either a prefix or a suffix for this; i use ‘ful’ on the end of all my character names.   I have a guildmate who uses ‘fly‘ at the beginning of his.  In this way when you see a guildie with a particular letter combo, you can be pretty sure you know who they are.

As for 2, this is a bit tricky, but i think it can be quite handy.   Keeping guildies with multiple toons straight is way easier when you know which one you are looking for.   As all my names are based on adjectives that end in ‘ful’ as mentioned above, I can pick an adjective that, at least to some extent, describes which each of my toons does.

For example; Mindful is a mage, Stealthful is a rogue, Tactful is a warrior.   This configuration is convenient as there are an awful lot of adjectives out there in case one is taken.   You can read up here on how others have chosen their names.
